Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced on Saturday the government's plan to form a committee addressing the significant gap between farm-gate prices and retail costs of horticulture produce.

Chouhan, speaking at an agricultural conference in the national capital, highlighted the stark difference: 'When farmers sell vegetables for Rs 5, consumers end up paying Rs 50. This gulf needs to narrow,' he said.

To tackle price volatility, Chouhan proposed a two-pronged approach. For instances of price spikes, such as those seen with tomatoes, he suggested joint subsidies from the Centre and state governments for transportation costs, ensuring urban consumers receive vegetables at fair prices without harming farmer interests. Additionally, Chouhan announced the upcoming launch of 'Krishi Chaupal', a program aimed at bridging the lab-to-land gap in agricultural research.

The minister stressed the need to optimize operations at the over 730 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) nationwide, citing fragmented management under various authorities like ICAR, universities, and state governments. He noted that some states neglect KVKs and called for better coordination. With consultations already held with 17 state governments, Chouhan addressed key agricultural challenges.

Calling on states to develop model farms spanning 2-2.5 acres to illustrate best agricultural practices, Chouhan declared, 'Agriculture is India's economic backbone. No progress is possible without strengthening this sector.'
