Tensions Soar in Bahraich After Deadly Clash During Durga Procession

On Tuesday, Samajwadi Party leader ST Hasan condemned the violent incident in Bahraich, advocating for decisive actions against individuals jeopardizing societal peace. Hasan emphasized the necessity of enforcing laws to maintain harmony nationwide, urging authorities to act against both political figures and civilians responsible for disturbances.
The clash originated during a Durga idol immersion in the Mahasi area of Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich district, resulting in one fatality and multiple injuries. The police report indicated that tensions escalated as the procession passed through a predominantly Muslim area, culminating in firefight and subsequent unrest.
Bahraich Superintendent of Police, Vrinda Shukla, described the incident location as Maharajganj in Mahasi. A Hindu community member succumbed to gunfire injuries, sparking further tensions. Authorities halted the procession at several points due to opportunistic agitators. Thirty suspects are detained, with efforts to capture the main fugitive underway, as confirmed by the Bahraich SP.
Local law enforcement conducted a route march post-clash, aiming to restore order. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken a firm stance, asserting that instigators will face severe consequences. Community safety remains paramount, with instructions issued to apprehend the culprits and ensure the idol immersion proceeds uninterrupted.
Chief Minister Adityanath reiterated the administration's commitment to identifying those responsible for the disruption and ensuring accountability. He instructed officials to establish communication with religious bodies to guarantee the safe and timely completion of the idol immersion ceremony.
