Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma toured landslide and flood-stricken areas in the Garo Hills on Tuesday, bringing crucial relief and support to affected locales. In a somber visit, he extended an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the families who experienced the heartbreaking loss of loved ones amid multiple landslides.

At least 15 individuals have succumbed to the recent spate of floods and landslides battering two districts. On his visit, the Chief Minister engaged with the victimized families in a series of stops across villages within the Dalu C&RD block of West Garo Hills, offering words of consolation in light of the tragic events that have unfolded.

In Tura's Rongkhon Songgital, the Chief Minister awarded a sum of Rs 8 lakh to the bereaved wife of late Bijoy Marak, whose vehicle was swept away by relentless floodwaters, leading to deaths including that of his son, Wian Chigado R Marak, on October 4. Over in Karonggre, Dalu, he met the family of 18-year-old Sanira Marak, who was lost to a landslide, presenting a Rs 4 lakh compensation.

He also visited Sorokpara village, Dalu, to console the grieving parents of Miando P Marak, a young victim of a landslide during play, and expressed profound sorrow. Another stop was at Tibapara, Dalu, where he offered sympathy to the family of Tengseng R Marak, tragically killed by a falling tree. The family of Santa Marak, buried in a landslide in Koinabhui, Dalu, was also visited; her surviving daughter suffered injuries.

Significant damage to numerous households due to landslides was evident. Chief Minister Sangma assessed the extent of the impact and engaged with the distressed communities. A strategic meeting with West Garo Hills District Administration followed, focusing on evaluating the devastation from flash floods and landslides within the Dalu C&RD Block, while ensuring the efficiency of relief operations.

In Dalu C&RD Block, the natural disasters have inflicted damage on 2,630 households, claiming six lives. To aid recovery, 68 relief camps have been established, provisioning food and shelter to those displaced by the adverse conditions. (ANI)
