Agriculture Minister Todd McClay and Rural Communities Minister Mark Patterson have announced up to $50,000 in additional Government support for farmers and growers in Southland and parts of Otago, following severe spring weather that has been classified as a medium-scale adverse event.

“The relentless wet weather has placed immense strain on farmers and their livestock, exacerbating what has already been a challenging year,” Minister McClay said. “Torrential rain over the last 24 hours has led to further flooding, particularly in areas of Southland that have received over 200% of the average September rainfall.”

Targeted Assistance for Rural Communities

The Government is collaborating with local Rural Support Trusts in Otago and Southland, alongside key sector groups, to roll out targeted assistance for those affected. The additional support will include a local coordinator to organize recovery efforts and wellbeing events, helping farmers and growers to manage through these difficult times.

“It’s vital we provide not only recovery support but also access to specialized advice and wellbeing resources,” McClay explained. “Farmers and growers have shown tremendous resilience, and this assistance will help them navigate through the aftermath of the severe weather.”

Mental Health and Community Support

Both ministers emphasized the importance of mental health and community solidarity during this period. Minister Patterson encouraged rural communities to check in on one another. “The effects of this ongoing wet and cold weather take a toll on our hardworking rural families. If you or someone you know needs help, don’t hesitate to reach out,” Patterson said.

The medium-scale adverse event classification currently covers the entire Southland region and the Clutha District in Otago. The Government will continue to monitor conditions in other areas and assess the need for further assistance in the coming weeks.

This funding is part of broader efforts to support the country’s rural communities. In June, the Government announced $250,000 in annual funding for Rural Support Trusts, enabling them to provide timely support for personal, financial, and weather-related challenges.
