The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday took Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, the officer-in-charge of Tala police station, into custody. The arrests are in connection with the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata.

According to sources, the CBI's special crime branch detained Mondal for allegedly delaying the registration of the First Information Report (FIR) and Ghosh for misleading the investigation and destroying evidence by not promptly declaring the death of the victim. Junior doctors celebrating the arrests were seen singing at the protest site outside Swasthya Bhavan.

The junior doctors have been demanding the arrests of Ghosh and Mondal, blaming them for tampering with evidence. Following a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that fell through over live streaming requests, the junior doctors continued their protest, calling for enhanced safety measures at medical institutions.
