Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Saturday reiterated a series of initiatives undertaken by the central government to support farmers and agricultural development. In a social media post, Chouhan praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's commitment to farmers, describing him as a 'farmer-friendly Prime Minister'.

One of the key measures includes increasing the basic duty on refined oil to 32.5 percent. Chouhan pointed out that this move is set to enhance demand for crops like mustard, sunflower, and groundnut, thus helping farmers get better prices and fostering the establishment of refineries in rural areas, which in turn, could generate more employment.

Moreover, the export duty on onions has been slashed from 40 percent to 20 percent. Chouhan emphasized that this adjustment would benefit onion-producing farmers by securing better prices and boosting exports. He remarked, 'The Modi government, committed to the progress of farmers, has reduced the export duty on onions from 40% to 20%.'

In another significant decision, the minimum export duty on Basmati rice has been removed, a step designed to ensure fair prices for Basmati farmers and increase export demand. Chouhan highlighted this move's positive impact on both farmers and the export sector, noting the government's sensitivity towards farmer welfare.

Additionally, an increase in import duty on edible oils from 0 to 20 percent, with an overall effective duty of 27.5 percent, has been implemented. This is expected to raise soybean prices and encourage manufacturers to buy domestically. Chouhan concluded by thanking Prime Minister Modi for these crucial decisions that serve the agriculture sector.
