Vietnam Explores Nuclear Power to Bolster Energy Security and Growth
Vietnam plans to investigate the development of nuclear power to ensure energy security and sustain economic growth. The Southeast Asian nation, heavily reliant on coal, aims to enhance cleaner energy production to meet its 2050 net zero target. Vietnam will investigate developing nuclear power to ensure national energy security and to support economic growth, according to a document reviewed by Reuters.
The Southeast Asian nation, a regional industrial hub heavily dependent on coal for power, aims to boost cleaner energy production to meet its 2050 net zero target. "The Ministry of Industry and Trade is to conduct research on the nuclear power development experience of other countries and make a proposal to develop nuclear power in Vietnam," the document, dated September 12, stated.
Vietnam targets raising its power generation capacity by 12%-15% annually to secure national energy security and sustain a 7% economic growth rate. The nuclear power development proposal will be submitted to the Politburo, the country's highest decision-making body, for review, though no time frame was outlined.
