The Department of Fisheries marked the fourth anniversary of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) with a celebration and comprehensive review meeting in New Delhi. The event, which included the launch of new projects, focused on assessing the progress of various fisheries initiatives, identifying challenges, and planning future developments under PMMSY and related schemes.

Chaired by Dr. Abhilakh Likhi, Secretary of the Department of Fisheries, the meeting highlighted significant achievements of PMMSY and introduced the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana (PM-MKSSY). The session saw participation from Joint Secretary (Inland Fisheries) Shri Sagar Mehra, senior officers, state fisheries department representatives, officials from the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), and Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) experts.

Shri Sagar Mehra emphasized the government's commitment to sustainable practices and innovative strategies in the fisheries sector. Presentations included updates from NFDB on strengthening the fisheries value chain, and from Shri Mehra on the Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF), which focuses on infrastructure investments. Dr. J.K. Jena of ICAR shared recent scientific research and technological advancements aimed at enhancing productivity and sustainability.

The meeting reviewed financial progress under PMMSY, focusing on fund utilization and effective project implementation. Discussions also addressed region-specific challenges, particularly in marine fisheries and the needs of Northeastern and Himalayan states/UTs. Best practices were showcased, including the Integrated Aquapark development in Arunachal Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh’s "Fish Andhra" initiative.

The session concluded with a reaffirmed commitment from all stakeholders to advance the fisheries sector, aligning with the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. The government pledged continued support for innovation, sustainability, and the growth of India's blue economy.

Since 2015, India has invested Rs. 38,572 crore through various schemes like the Blue Revolution Scheme, FIDF, PMMSY, and PM-MKSSY, significantly advancing the fisheries sector and benefiting fish farmers, women, marginalized, and tribal communities. Launched in May 2020, PMMSY aims to address critical gaps in fish production, enhance infrastructure, and improve traceability and welfare for fishers.
