North Korea launched several short-range ballistic missiles off its east coast on Thursday, marking the first such occurrence in over two months, according to South Korea's military. The missiles were fired from Pyongyang around 7:10 a.m. local time and traveled approximately 360 km before landing in the sea, the Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed, without specifying the exact number fired.

“We strongly condemn North Korea's missile launch, which is a clear provocation that seriously threatens peace and stability on the Korean peninsula,” stated South Korea's military. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida also condemned the launch, stating that Tokyo has lodged a formal protest against North Korea. Kishida emphasized ongoing monitoring efforts and cooperation with the U.S. and South Korea.

Notably, this launch follows a period of heightened military activity by North Korea, including a test of a new tactical ballistic missile on July 1. It also comes amid accusations from Ukraine and the U.S. that North Korea has been supplying Russia with weapons, including ballistic missiles, for use in the Ukraine conflict, a charge that both Moscow and Pyongyang deny.
