In a significant development in Assam's Rs 2,200 crore financial scam, Assamese actress Sumi Borah and her husband Tarkik Borah surrendered on Monday, ending a 10-day evasion. The couple, linked to a fraudulent online stock market investment, turned themselves in to Assam Police in Dibrugarh. Assam Director General of Police GP Singh announced the surrender on social media platform X, stating, 'The game is up for them. Compliments to the Team STF.'

On September 3, Assam Police arrested 22-year-old Bishal Phukan in Dibrugarh and Swapnanil Das in Guwahati, both implicated in the scam. The police have since mobilized 14 Special Investigation Teams (SITs) to investigate cases filed under the Unregulated Deposit Schemes Act. DGP GP Singh revealed that the SITs are overseen by senior officials at the Assam Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters. The operation spans 14 districts and has led to 59 arrests and 22 Look Out Circulars (LOCs).

Among the high-profile cases is Dibrugarh Police Station Case No. 352/2024, which has now been transferred to the CID for faster investigation. The case falls under several sections, including BNS 2023 and the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Scheme Act, 2019. CID is forming another SIT to expedite this probe. Meanwhile, two individuals were apprehended in a separate fraud investigation via the YBY fund app on September 7. The suspects, identified as Aniram Basumatary and Mithinga Narzary from Biswanath district, are now facing legal actions.
