Typhoon Yagi Devastates Vietnam Industrial Hubs
Typhoon Yagi caused substantial damage to industrial hubs in northern Vietnam, flooding factories and halting operations. The typhoon has disrupted global supply chains, with multinational companies affected. Severe infrastructure damage, including power outages and water shortages, further hampers recovery efforts. Many businesses are struggling to resume operations amid ongoing floods and rain.
Typhoon Yagi has wrought havoc on Vietnam's northern industrial hubs, causing extensive damage to factories and warehouses, leading to prolonged operational disruptions, according to local executives. Asia's strongest typhoon of the year continues to unleash deadly floods and landslides, devastating infrastructure such as power networks and roads after hitting the coast over the weekend.
The typhoon's aftermath poses significant threats to global supply chains as Vietnam's industrial zones are vital production sites for numerous multinational companies exporting to the U.S., Europe, and other developed markets. Calvin Nguyen, head of WeDo Forwarding Co., lamented the loss of products destined for overseas markets. The company's warehouses in Haiphong remain severely impacted, with roofs torn off and persistent flooding.
Efforts to resume operations are underway, with Haiphong authorities reporting that 95% of businesses were expected to be partially functional by Tuesday. However, substantial damage to infrastructure and ongoing power outages mean full recovery could take weeks or months. Power distributor EVN struggles to restore electricity, and many factories in neighboring Quang Ninh lack essential utilities, exacerbating recovery challenges. Multinational enterprises such as LG Electronics and Jinko Solar have seen their operations severely disrupted, underscoring the widespread impact of the typhoon.
