RBI Imposes Hefty Penalties on Axis and HDFC Banks

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has levied penalties totaling Rs 2.91 crore on Axis Bank and HDFC Bank for breaches in statutory and regulatory compliance.
According to a statement from the central bank on Tuesday, Axis Bank has been fined Rs 1.91 crore for violating specific provisions of the Banking Regulation Act, including non-compliance with directives such as 'Interest Rate on Deposits', 'Know Your Customer (KYC)', and 'Credit Flow to Agriculture-Collateral free agricultural loans'.
HDFC Bank was fined Rs 1 crore for not adhering to directives on 'interest rate on deposits', 'recovery agents engaged by banks', and 'customer service in banks'. The penalties underscore deficiencies in compliance but do not comment on the validity of any specific transactions or agreements between the banks and their clients.
