A CBI court on Tuesday remanded Sandip Ghosh, ex-principal of RG Kar Medical College, and three others to judicial custody until September 23 in connection with financial irregularities. The Anti-Corruption Branch of the CBI had arrested Ghosh on September 2 after a directive from the Calcutta High Court to investigate the matter.

Following the orders of the Calcutta High Court on August 24, the CBI registered an FIR against Ghosh for alleged corruption. The Indian Medical Association of Kolkata suspended Ghosh's membership amid the ongoing CBI probe. Previously, the CBI conducted multiple polygraph tests on Ghosh as part of their investigation into the alleged rape-murder of a woman doctor at the institution.

The Calcutta High Court has instructed the CBI to submit a progress report by September 17. The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.

On Friday, the Supreme Court refused to entertain Ghosh's plea against the Calcutta High Court's decision ordering a CBI probe. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra dismissed Ghosh's objections to the adverse remarks made against him. The court ruled that Ghosh lacks the standing to intervene in the public interest litigation alleging financial irregularities.

While Ghosh's counsel argued he was not against the CBI investigation, they objected to the court's observations linking him to the RG Kar rape incident, calling it an injustice. The Supreme Court maintained that given Ghosh's role as principal during the incidents, it remains a matter of investigation, and has requested a status report from the CBI.
