Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference (JKPC) chairman Sajad Gani Lone emphasized on Tuesday that 'Azadi' sentiments in the region are still present, albeit underground. Speaking exclusively to ANI, Lone stated that the aspiration for independence hasn't vanished but has merely gone underground. 'It was declining until the deployment of a muscular policy,' he noted, adding that such measures have extended the longevity of these sentiments, making them visible only to Kashmiris.

When questioned about the fragile peace in Jammu and Kashmir, Lone agreed, saying, 'It seems so now.' Reflecting on his earlier electoral defeat, he admitted that his previous belief in eternal peace has wavered. Lone's setback in the parliamentary elections led him to reassess the situation. 'It was a vote against Delhi and the BJP,' he stated, having lost to independent candidate Sheikh Abdur Rashid, who secured a substantial lead over former chief minister Omar Abdullah.

Looking forward, Lone announced his intention to contest the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections from two constituencies in north Kashmir's Kupwara district: Handwara and Kupwara. These elections will unfold in three phases: September 18, 25, and October 1, with vote counting on October 8.
