AIIMS New Delhi is poised to open a new Tobacco Cessation Clinic (TCC) at the New RAK OPD as part of its 'Tobacco-Free AIIMS' initiative, according to a press release. The clinic will formally launch on September 10, 2024.

In collaboration with the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre (NDDTC) and the Department of Pulmonary, Critical, and Sleep Medicine, the clinic aims to tackle India's significant public health challenge posed by tobacco use. 'The TCC is a crucial step towards creating a healthier environment,' said Prof. M. Srinivas, Director, AIIMS Delhi.

Scheduled to operate in Rooms 519 and 526 in the Department of Pulmonary Medicine's A-Wing on the 5th floor, the clinic will be open every Tuesday morning from September 10. Registration begins at 08:30 AM on the ground floor of the A-Wing. 'Tobacco Cessation Services are a key objective of the National Tobacco Control Program (NTCP),' said Dr. Anju Dhawan, Chief, NDDTC, AIIMS.

Dr. Anant Mohan, Head of the Department, pointed out that tobacco use is a leading cause of respiratory diseases, including COPD and lung cancer. 'The clinic will raise public awareness and provide essential support,' he said. Dr. Prabhoo Dayal underlined the gravity of the issue, citing that tobacco use accounts for over 8 million deaths annually worldwide, including more than 1.3 million in India.

The clinic will bring together specialists from addiction psychiatry, pulmonary medicine, and other disciplines to offer a holistic approach to tobacco cessation. Services will include individual consultations, group sessions, and educational materials, supported by digital tools for ongoing assistance.
