Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on Saturday visited the Mughal-era Sheesh Mahal Complex in Shalimar Bagh, expressing satisfaction with the restoration progress.
The site, once home to architectural grandeur and Charbagh Gardens, began its rejuvenation after the LG's initial visit in January, highlighting its historic significance as Emperor Aurangzeb's coronation site in 1658. The restoration, led by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and Delhi Development Authority (DDA), aims to return the monument to its former glory.
This December, the capital will gain a restored DDA Recreational Green spanning 150 acres in Shalimar Bagh. The LG praised the cohesive efforts of ASI and DDA. Restoration involves intricate sandstone carvings, a water channel system, and the revival of historic gardens originally commissioned by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan's wife, Akbarbadi Begum. Similar works are underway at Roshanara Bagh and Sanjay Van in South Delhi.
