The Delhi High Court on Friday ordered St. Stephen's College to admit seven students according to Delhi University's seat allocation. Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma stated that since the university's allocation method had not been invalidated, the college must follow the previous year's policy and admit the petitioning students accordingly. The institution was instructed to facilitate the students' class attendance post-formalities.
The verdict addressed two petitions from seven students challenging the admission process at St. Stephen's College. The court ruled that the college must adhere to Delhi University's seat allocation and complete the admission process. Petitioners argued that their admissions were delayed despite being allocated seats by the university. While Delhi University supported their claims, St. Stephen's College opposed them.
St. Stephen's College contended it was not required to admit all students given its limitation on intake, against the university's common seat allocation system. Initially, six students were granted provisional admission by a single-judge bench due to meeting all requirements. However, the college appealed, resulting in a division bench barring these students from classes pending the petition's resolution. A seventh student later joined, with all seeking admission under Delhi University's 'single girl child quota.'
