The central government has extended its ceasefire agreement with the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (K)/Niki Group for an additional year, announced the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Thursday. The agreement will now be in effect from September 8, 2024, to September 7, 2025. Originally signed on September 6, 2021, the accord has played a significant role in advancing peace efforts in the region.

Upon signing the agreement in 2021, the MHA reported that over 200 cadres of NSCN-NK had joined the peace process. The ministry emphasized that this initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for an 'insurgency-free and prosperous North East.' Earlier this year, on April 6, 2023, the central government also extended ceasefire agreements with three other Naga groups: National Socialist Council of Nagaland-NK (NSCN-NK), National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Reformation (NSCN-R), and National Socialist Council of Nagaland-K-Khango (NSCN-K-Khango).

These groups are breakaway factions of NSCN-IM and NSCN-K, which have signed multiple ceasefire agreements with the government over the years, contributing to a steady, albeit complex, progress toward peace in the region.
