In a significant legal development, Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of RG Kar Medical College, has petitioned the Supreme Court to challenge a Calcutta High Court decision that mandates a CBI investigation into graft charges against him. The matter has been slated for hearing on September 6 before Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud.

The Central Bureau of Investigation's Anti-Corruption Branch apprehended Dr Sandip Ghosh on September 2, following accusations of corruption and financial malfeasance at the medical institution. This arrest comes as a result of directives from a single bench of the Calcutta High Court, compelling the CBI to look into the allegations.

Dr Ghosh has been remanded to an 8-day police custody starting on Tuesday. Following the High Court's directive on August 24, the CBI registered an official FIR against him, intensifying the scrutiny. The Indian Medical Association in Kolkata has temporarily suspended Ghosh's membership amidst the ongoing CBI probe.

On August 26, as part of an unrelated investigation into the rape-murder case of a trainee doctor at the institution, the CBI concluded a second round of polygraph tests on Dr Ghosh. The Calcutta High Court has allotted three weeks for the CBI to file a progress report, due on September 17.

The incident dates back to August 9 when a trainee doctor was discovered dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. (ANI)
