Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has declared August 20 as Sootea Day to honor the region's pivotal role in India's freedom movement. Celebrations will now receive government support, with local participation enhancing the event, Sarma announced Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister paid tribute at Sootea Police Station in Biswanath District, a historic site where the national flag was hoisted in 1942 amidst the Quit India Movement. "In response to a nationwide call to hoist the national flag at every police station on September 20, the people of Sootea, led by the late Biman Chandra Bora, raised the flag at this location on August 20, 1942," Sarma stated.

Highlighting Sootea Police Station's rich history, Sarma announced a Rs 5 crore heritage monument project to commemorate the site. This initiative will include a garden and statues of key leaders, celebrating the area's legacy. MPs Ranjit Dutta, MLA Padma Hazarika, Principal Secretary B Kalyan Chakravarthy, and ADGP Munna Prasad were also present at the ceremony.
