Russian President Vladimir Putin has made a state visit to Mongolia as part of ongoing discussions regarding a new gas pipeline that will connect Russia and China. This pipeline, known as Power of Siberia 2, plans to ship 50 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually via Mongolia.
This project forms part of Russia's strategy to offset the reduction in European gas sales caused by the Ukraine war. The new pipeline is intended to complement the existing Power of Siberia pipeline, which will reach its full capacity of 38 billion cubic meters per year by 2025. Despite earlier delays over pricing issues, Putin announced that preparatory work is progressing on schedule.
During his visit, Putin will meet with Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh. Ukraine has called on Mongolia to arrest Putin based on a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court for war crimes related to the illegal deportation of Ukrainian children. The Kremlin has dismissed these charges as politically motivated.
