A Public Interest Litigation has been filed in the Delhi High Court by Hindu Sena Chief, Surjit Singh Yadav, seeking a ban on Netflix's series "IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack." The PIL claims the series distorts the identities of the terrorists involved in the 1999 hijacking of Indian Flight 814.
Filed through Advocate Shashi Ranjan, the petition asserts that the series inaccurately assigns Hindu names like "Bhola" and "Shankar" to the real hijackers - Ibrahim Akhtar, Shahid Akhtar Sayeed, Sunny Ahmed Qazi, Zahoor Mistry, and Shakir. This misrepresentation, according to the petitioner, offends the sentiments of the Hindu community.
The plea highlights that India's Constitution upholds secularism and mandates mutual respect for all religions. It contends that filmmakers have a duty to avoid disturbing religious sentiments. The Cinematograph Act, 1952, was enacted to regulate films in this regard. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has summoned Netflix's content head in response to social media backlash.
