Actor Vijay Varma, known for his recent role as Captain Devi Sharan in Netflix's IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, has revealed receiving high praise directly from the real Captain Sharan. The series, based on the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC 814, spotlights Varma's portrayal of the head pilot during the traumatic week-long event.

During a Tuesday press meet, Varma expressed his delight at the commendation he got from Captain Sharan himself. 'I was thrilled that Captain Devi Sharan enjoyed my performance. He called me and gave a pat on my back. Also, Mrs. Sharan mentioned, 'I know this man more than he knows himself, and you have come very close to his essence,'' Varma noted.

Varma emphasized that his goal was not to mimic the real-life captain. He stated, 'There was no effort to make him sound exactly like the real-life Captain. Our director, Anubhav Sinha, never showed me pictures of a young Devi Sharan. The aim was always to capture the spirit rather than imitate.' The press meet was also attended by director Anubhav Sinha, alongside co-stars Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Kumud Mishra, Manoj Pahwa, Dia Mirza, and Pooja Gor.

The series, created by Anubhav Sinha and Trishant Shrivastava, features an ensemble cast including Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, Vijay Varma, Arvind Swamy, Patralekhaa, and Dia Mirza. The six-episode drama chronicles the harrowing hijacking of Flight IC 814 on December 24, 1999, shortly after taking off from Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport en route to Delhi. (ANI)
