A Russian drone and missile attack on Monday forced Ukraine to disconnect several of its nuclear power units from the grid, raising significant risks to the nuclear sector, according to a Ukrainian mission to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

According to Ukrainian officials, Russia launched more than 200 missiles and drones aimed at Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Ukrainian authorities stated that the attacks are a deliberate effort by Russia to disrupt the operation of the country's nuclear power plants, which supply most of its electricity.

The Ukrainian mission to the U.N. nuclear watchdog said in a note on Thursday that the continued targeting of the energy infrastructure puts the stable operation of nuclear facilities at considerable risk and jeopardizes the safety of millions. Russian attacks triggered the disconnection of three out of four power units at the Rivne nuclear power plant and a unit at the South Ukrainian nuclear plant.
