Russia Pressures IAEA for Clearer Stance on Nuclear Safety Amid Ongoing Conflict
Russia urged the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to adopt a more objective stance on nuclear safety following the agency's inspection of a Russian nuclear plant near an area of conflict with Ukraine. The call comes amid heightened tensions and accusations regarding the proximity of military operations to nuclear facilities.
Russia has called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to adopt a more objective and clearer stance on nuclear safety. This request was made just a day after IAEA chief Rafael Grossi visited a Russian nuclear plant near conflict zones in Ukraine.
According to a statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, Moscow wants the IAEA to speak out more explicitly on issues of nuclear security. This appeal follows an inspection by Grossi, who warned of a serious nuclear accident risk at the Kursk plant following a recent drone strike.
Adding to the tension, Russia claimed that its forces defused unexploded munitions from U.S.-supplied rockets near the Kursk plant. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed that Ukraine is escalating nuclear risks, although Ukraine has declined to comment on these accusations.
