The Delhi Court has granted interim bail to Meeran Haider, a student from Jamia Millia Islamia and leader of the RJD youth wing, in connection with the 'larger conspiracy case' tied to the 2020 Delhi riots. Haider sought bail on humanitarian grounds following the death of his sister's premature child.

Haider's lawyer argued that his sister lacked support from other male family members, as her husband works in the UAE. Highlighting Haider's continuous custody since April 1, 2020, the lawyer stressed that this was his first interim bail request. The prosecution noted that the application's facts had been verified, adding that the sister's husband, currently in India, is set to return to the UAE on Sunday.

Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpayi on Saturday deemed the relief justified and granted Haider interim bail for ten days. Haider is restricted from contacting witnesses or tampering with evidence and must keep his mobile phone active and reachable. He is also prohibited from engaging with media during this period.

Meanwhile, Haider's regular bail request is still pending before the Delhi High Court, following its earlier denial by the trial court. Delhi Police allege Haider's significant role in organizing the 2020 protests as a key coordinator of the Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC), thereby justifying charges under the UAPA and IPC.

The police also accuse Haider, alongside Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, of masterminding the riots linked to the CAA and NRC protests, which resulted in 53 deaths and over 700 injuries.
