The anti-corruption branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) carried out a series of searches on Sunday at multiple locations tied to former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh and his relatives in Kolkata, West Bengal. According to CBI sources, searches were being conducted at 15 different sites across the city related to Dr. Ghosh and his family members.

In addition to these searches, a CBI team visited the residence of Dr. Debashish Som, a Demonstrator of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, on Sunday morning. These searches follow a complaint filed three days earlier by Akhtar Ali, the former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Medical College, who alleged corruption and irregularities at the institution and specifically named Dr. Debashish Som.

On Saturday, the CBI registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Dr. Sandip Ghosh on the orders of the Calcutta High Court. The investigation was launched after a single bench of the High Court directed the CBI to investigate the alleged corruption at the medical college. Prior to this, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) from the High Court had visited the CBI office to hand over important documents related to the case. Acting on this information, the CBI quickly filed the FIR and submitted a copy to the Alipur Chief Judicial Magistrate Court. The High Court has given the CBI three weeks to submit a progress report on the investigation, to be presented on September 17. Earlier in the week, the Supreme Court ordered that security at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College be transferred to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), while hearing a suo motu case regarding the rape and murder of a trainee doctor found dead on August 9.
