Metro Railway in Kolkata has announced a Rs 10 surcharge on night service tickets for the Blue Line's New Garia-Dumdum stretch. This trial surcharge begins January 1, 2025, on weekdays, and applies to special night services available at 10:40 pm.

A Metro spokesperson indicated that this measure was made necessary due to the poor occupancy observed in these services since their introduction. The same Rs 10 surcharge will apply uniformly, no matter the distance travelled during the night service that starts after regular hours.

Initially planned for early December, the move faced criticism on social media. However, the decision is set to be implemented from the beginning of the new year, with an intention to review its impact over time.
