Delhi NCR has swiftly crossed the long-period average (LPA) of 640.4 mm of rainfall, marking it as an unusually wet monsoon season. The heavy downpour has resulted in widespread waterlogging and various challenges across the city. However, the incessant rains have also led to a surge in infections, posing significant health risks, particularly for children.

Dr. Rajiv Uttam, Director of Paediatric Pulmonology and Critical Care Paediatrics at Medanta, Gurugram, has observed a concerning rise in viral infections among children. 'We're seeing a significant rise in pediatric cases of viral fever with respiratory symptoms such as cough, cold, and abdominal pain, especially post heavy rains. Cases involving loose motions are also increasing, although not excessively. Children with asthma are particularly at risk as viral infections worsen their symptoms, causing more severe asthma flare-ups,' he noted. 'In terms of respiratory issues, we've seen a 15-20 percent increase in the past two weeks. Additionally, monsoon-related allergies and waterborne diseases are on the rise,' Dr. Uttam added.

The heightened humidity and constant wet conditions during the monsoon create an ideal environment for various pathogens to thrive. Children, with their developing immune systems, are particularly vulnerable. Respiratory illnesses, including asthma, are among the most common issues faced during this season. Dr. Gajanan B. Mankikar, senior pediatric consultant in Bhosari, Pune, echoes these concerns. 'During monsoon season, it's crucial for parents to be aware of the respiratory challenges. Increased humidity, allergens, and air pollution can significantly impact children's lungs, worsening chronic respiratory conditions like asthma or increasing their susceptibility to such conditions,' he emphasized.

He advises parents to manage monsoon asthma by maintaining an asthma-friendly indoor environment, practicing good hygiene, monitoring air quality, adhering to an asthma action plan, and ensuring annual flu vaccinations are up-to-date. 'By understanding these triggers and taking proactive measures, parents can help their children stay healthy and enjoy the monsoon season,' Dr. Mankikar suggested. Healthcare professionals urge parents to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect their children from increased infection risks. Regular medical check-ups, proper hygiene, and adherence to prescribed treatments are essential during the monsoon season. (ANI)
