Prosecutors in Italy announced Saturday the initiation of an investigation into shipwreck and manslaughter following the capsizing of a superyacht during a storm off the coast of Sicily, leading to the tragic death of seven individuals onboard.
Termini Imerese prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio confirmed the ongoing investigation but stated no suspects have been identified. "We are only in the initial phase of the investigation. We can't exclude any sort of development at present," he informed reporters during a news conference.
The primary focus for investigators is understanding how an 'unsinkable' sailing vessel, manufactured by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained unaffected. Rescuers recovered the last of the seven bodies on Friday from The Bayesian, a 56-metre British-flagged luxury yacht that foundered in a storm near Sicily early Monday. The passengers included British tech magnate Mike Lynch and his family, who were celebrating his acquittal on fraud charges.
