The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has initiated its own investigation into two severe food poisoning incidents in Andhra Pradesh, resulting in the deaths of three children and numerous others falling ill.
Based on media reports dated August 19th and 21st, the NHRC noted significant health impacts due to food poisoning at Chittoor Apollo Health University, where 70 students were affected and are now receiving treatment at Chittoor Government Hospital. In another case, three children died, and 37 others were hospitalized in Anakapalli and Vishakhapatnam after a similar incident at an orphanage in Anakapalli district.
The Commission highlighted the potential human rights violations stemming from these incidents, attributing them to the negligence of authorities in ensuring food quality. Consequently, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Andhra Pradesh, demanding comprehensive reports within two weeks. The reports are expected to cover the status of FIRs, the health condition of victims, and measures taken to prevent future occurrences.
