The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has mandated social media platforms to comply with an order from the Supreme Court of India, requiring the removal of the deceased victim's identity in the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case.

In its directive, the Supreme Court instructed the prompt removal of all references, including names, photographs, and videos of the deceased, from social media and electronic media. This order came after concerns were raised about the spread of sensitive materials related to the incident.

The Supreme Court stated, 'This Court is constrained to issue an injunctive order since social and electronic media have published the identity of the deceased and photographs of the dead body.' MeitY stresses the importance of adhering to the Court's directive to preserve the privacy and dignity of the individuals involved. Social media platforms must take immediate action to comply, warning of potential legal and regulatory consequences for non-compliance.
