The horrific rape and murder of a medical trainee in Kolkata has sparked outrage among doctors nationwide, prompting a widespread strike. Dr. Indra Shekhar Prasad, President of the Resident Doctors Association, voiced that without solid assurances of safety, the strike will persist.
Prasad emphasized the recurrence of such incidents, stressing that doctors work in a temple-like environment. The need for safety is paramount, he said, as if doctors feel unsafe, patients will too.
Dr. Suvrankar Datta, Vice-President of the Resident Doctors Association at AIIMS, called for legal protections. He demanded the Central Government implement a Central Protection Act or provide written assurance of forthcoming legal measures. The CBI has taken over the investigation, while OPD services at RG Kar Medical College remain shut as the protest continues.
