In a decisive move on Wednesday, the Congress nominated Abhishek Manu Singhvi as its candidate for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha bypoll in Telangana. The announcement was made via an AICC press release, with Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal confirming Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge's approval.
'Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has approved the candidature of Abhishek Manu Singhvi to contest the ensuing bye-elections to the Council of States from Telangana,' Venugopal stated. This nomination follows Singhvi's previous loss in the Rajya Sabha elections in Himachal Pradesh earlier this year.
The Election Commission of India had earlier set September 3 as the polling date for the vacant Rajya Sabha seat in Telangana, a vacancy arising from the resignation of former BRS MP K Keshava Rao. Notably, Keshava Rao, a former chief of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee who joined BRS in 2013, has recently returned to Congress, prompting this by-election.
