Amid ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has raised alarm over the declining Hindu population in both Assam and Bangladesh. Sarma indicated that similar demographic shifts are anticipated in West Bengal and Jharkhand.

Sarma referenced official census data up to 2011, noting a 9.23% decline in the Hindu population in Assam from 1951 to 2011, and a 13.5% decline in Bangladesh over the same period. He highlighted a recent incident where local Madrasa students in Bangladesh's Munshiganj removed the nameplate of the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway, renaming it after Hazrat Ibrahim (AS).

Bangladesh is currently grappling with political turbulence, marked by the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5 amidst mounting student-led protests. Nobel laureate economist Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the head of Bangladesh's interim government on August 8. President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath to Yunus, who now serves as the country's chief advisor, equivalent to the role of Prime Minister.
