Highlighting the frustrations of common men over prolonged court proceedings, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud emphasized the significance of Lok Adalats as a key alternative dispute resolution mechanism on Saturday. He noted that the often exhausting judicial process compels litigants to desperately seek settlements, even accepting terms below their legal entitlements.

CJI Chandrachud referenced multiple cases resolved during the recent Special Lok Adalat, including a motor accident claim where the claimant settled for lower compensation despite being eligible for more. 'Parties are ready to accept any sort of settlement because they want to get out of the system,' the CJI remarked.

During the Special Lok Adalat's commemoration, the CJI expressed concern over the weariness litigants face due to prolonged legal battles, stating, 'People are so fed up with the court's matters that they just want a settlement.' He called for the institutionalization of justice dispensation through Lok Adalats.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, also present at the event, noted that mediation is inherent to Indian culture, citing Lord Krishna's attempts at mediation in the Mahabharata. The commemoration marked the conclusion of the Special Lok Adalat week, which ran from July 29 to August 2.

Throughout the week, the court dedicated afternoons to hearing Lok Adalat matters, aiming for swift case resolutions. According to the Supreme Court, 14,045 cases were selected for the Special Lok Adalat, 4,883 were listed before the benches, and 920 were disposed of. (ANI)
