Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists (ICAE) on Saturday, asserting that India is actively seeking solutions for global food and nutrition security. Speaking at the National Agricultural Science Centre in Delhi, Modi highlighted that this is the first time in 65 years the conference is being held in India.

'I am happy that after 65 years, such a conference is being organized in India,' Modi remarked, welcoming delegates from various countries on behalf of India's vast agricultural community. He emphasized India's position as a food surplus nation working on global food security solutions.

'In India, we still plan based on six seasons and have 15 distinct agricultural climatic zones, each with unique practices,' Modi said, alluding to the diversity that makes India a beacon of hope for global food security. He noted that the country is the world's largest producer of milk, spices, and lentils.

Modi also spoke about India's rich agricultural traditions, citing the ancient text 'Krishi Parashar' as part of the country's historical heritage. He highlighted that science and logic are integral to these traditions.

The Prime Minister underscored India's advancements in digital agriculture, such as the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, which facilitates quick fund transfers to farmers' bank accounts. He said these innovations allow farmers to make data-driven decisions.

Addressing global challenges like water shortages, climate change, and nutrition, Modi said, 'India is the biggest producer of millets, which we have named Shri Ann. Our superfoods, produced with minimum water, can address global nutrition concerns.'

Modi also remembered Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, praising his contributions to raising India's farmers. He mentioned the Statue of Unity, the world's tallest statue, created from iron equipment collected from 600,000 villages.

The ICAE conference, running from August 2 to 7, 2024, aims to tackle the urgent need for sustainable agriculture amidst global issues like climate change and escalating production costs. The event will spotlight India's proactive measures in agricultural research and policy.

The conference seeks to strengthen partnerships between research institutes and influence policymaking both nationally and globally, especially in areas of digital agriculture and sustainable systems. Around 1,000 delegates from 75 countries are expected to participate.
