Delhi's Tis Hazari Court has sentenced a man to one year of imprisonment for committing an acid attack on a dog, which resulted in the loss of one eye of the animal. The court condemned the act, stating it shook the conscience of the court and branded it as bone-chilling. The incident, which dates back to 2020, led to an FIR being registered at Paharpur Ganj Police Station.
During the sentencing, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Richa Sharma remarked that the convict's crime was not only grave but also shook the foundations of humane behavior. She emphasized that leniency in such cases would lead to adverse societal consequences. Sharma highlighted that life is equally precious for animals and humans and that kindness towards animals reflects humanity.
The court quoted Mahatma Gandhi's stance on animal protection and cited philosopher Emmanuel Kant, who said cruelty towards animals indicates a hardened heart. Alongside the prison sentence, the court imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 under Section 429 IPC and Rs. 50 under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Defaulters would face an additional three months of simple imprisonment. The public prosecutor sought maximum punishment, while the defense argued the convict's age and difficult financial circumstances.
