A recent Khap panchayat in Jind, Haryana, spotlighted pivotal social matters, such as live-in relationships, same-sex marriage, and love marriages. Leaders articulated their views and called for legislative changes, stressing the importance of raising these issues with the government.
Binain Khap Head, Raghubir Nain, stated, 'Khaps are not against love marriages, but parental consent is crucial. Marriages within the same gotra should be prohibited. We also oppose live-in relationships and same-sex marriages.' He emphasized their dedication to the cause, adding, 'We plan to meet PM Modi and the Leader of Opposition to advocate for these issues and pressurize the current government. We will protest if our demands and amendments to the Hindu Code Bill are not addressed.' Khap leader Santosh Dahiya echoed these sentiments, citing family and genetic concerns.
Dahiya asserted that same-gotra marriages have been scientifically debunked. 'Families are falling apart due to live-in relationships, and the law supports them,' she warned. 'Marriage within the same gotra disrupts the social fabric and poses genetic risks, so it should be banned.'
Earlier this month, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami participated in a felicitation event in New Delhi, celebrating the State's implementation of the Uniform Civil Code. The CM highlighted provisions for registering live-in relationships to ensure parental awareness and youth safety. 'We introduced the registration to inform parents,' Dhami explained to ANI. 'Sometimes, souring relationships lead to crimes, leaving parents with regret. Ensuring youth security is our primary concern,' he affirmed.
