Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, appeared in a Sultanpur court in Uttar Pradesh on Friday regarding a defamation case. The court has scheduled the next hearing for August 12, 2024. The case stems from allegedly objectionable remarks Gandhi made about Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
According to Advocate Santosh Kumar Pandey, representing the complainant, Gandhi denied the allegations, suggesting they were politically motivated. 'He answered the questions posed by the court and recorded his statement,' Pandey said. Evidence is to be produced in the upcoming hearing. The complaint was lodged by BJP leader Vijay Mishra in 2018.
Pandey stated that the defamation case originates from comments made by Gandhi in Bengaluru on May 8, 2018, during an election rally leading up to the Karnataka elections. Rahul Gandhi's remarks were deemed defamatory towards Amit Shah. Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai indicated that numerous cases have been filed against Gandhi, aimed at harassing him. 'The Congress party is fighting these cases bravely,' Rai added.
