An Indian student is feared to have drowned while swimming in the Latvian capital, according to media reports on Saturday.
Friends of Albin Shinto from Kerala said they feared the worst after he disappeared while swimming in the Jugla canal in Rīga. Eyewitness Arhik Haries reported that Shinto was swimming with four other friends on the evening of July 18 when he got into difficulty. Despite attempts by two friends to save him, Shinto vanished beneath the waves. A passing fisherman managed to rescue the would-be saviors with his boat, but Shinto was lost.
The police and rescuers, including a diver, arrived quickly and searched for two to three hours but were unable to locate Shinto. The search was called off as night fell and will not resume until Monday due to limited resources.
The Indian mission for Sweden and Latvia confirmed in a post on X that it is in regular contact with Latvian authorities and is providing all possible assistance to Shinto's family.
