Maharashtra Set to Become Steel Giant: 30% of National Output from Gadchiroli

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that Maharashtra's Gadchiroli will contribute 30% of India's steel production. The Bhoomi Pujan for Surjagad steel plant marks the beginning of this ambitious project, which promises significant local employment and economic benefits.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Wednesday that in the coming days, 30% of India's total steel production will originate from Gadchiroli. The announcement came during a press interaction following the Bhoomi Pujan ceremony for the Surjagad Ispat Pvt Ltd steel project.

Fadnavis emphasized the transformative potential of the Rs 10,000 crore investment in the Surjagad integrated steel plant. The project, expected to produce 8 million tonnes of steel, aims to provide substantial benefits to local residents and the tribal population. Additional investments in Chamorshi will result in the employment of 20,000 individuals, significantly boosting the local economy.

Highlighting the strategic importance of Gadchiroli, a Naxal-affected district with large iron ore reserves, Fadnavis noted that 80% of the employment generated through these projects would be reserved for locals. Meanwhile, Tata Steel has expressed plans to double its manufacturing capacity in India to around 40 million tonnes per annum from its current output of 21 million tonnes, focusing on its sites in Jharkhand and Odisha.
