Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced on Tuesday his desire to see a permanent closure of U.S. construction company Vulcan Materials' facilities in Mexico, pointing to substantial environmental damages.

The ongoing conflict began in 2022 when Mexican authorities ordered a stop to limestone quarrying operations at Vulcan's site in Quintana Roo. Obrador emphasized his preference for a definitive resolution, reiterating his concerns over the environmental harm caused.

Vulcan Materials has refuted these claims and argues that Mexico has unlawfully expropriated its investments. The company has yet to issue an official response to the latest comments. In May, Obrador clarified that the site was closed, not expropriated, and would remain shut until his term ends in October.
