Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is targeting August 15, 2023, for the delivery of the first LCA Mark 1A fighter jet to the Indian Air Force (IAF), amid concerns over earlier delays. The overall delivery schedule had been hindered by software integration issues and delays in the supply of GE-404 engines, which are now set to commence from September-October, as confirmed by American engine maker GE.

'There have been some software-related issues in integration. We are working towards addressing these issues and are now working towards delivering the first plane before August 15 this year,' defence sources told ANI. Initially scheduled for delivery in February-March 2023, the timeline has shifted due to various challenges.

The Indian Air Force has emphasized the need for a fully integrated aircraft meeting all specified requirements. High-ranking IAF officials, including the Chief of Air Staff, have been closely monitoring the project's progress, and the Deputy Chief of Air Staff recently reviewed the developments at HAL's hangars. The first flight of the aircraft was conducted a few months ago.

The delay in the 83-unit LCA Mark 1A delivery program is largely attributed to the GE-404 engine supply delays, which have now been resolved with GE promising initial deliveries by September-October. HAL intends to expedite engine deliveries and increase monthly supply rates. The introduction of this indigenous fighter jet into the IAF will mark a significant move towards self-reliance in defense. Officials also mentioned that Prime Minister Modi might be invited to the induction ceremony.

The LCA Mark 1A project, initiated under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration, has already seen an order worth Rs 48,000 crore for 83 jets, with a forthcoming Rs 65,000 crore order for 97 more jets expected by the end of the fiscal year. The Defence Ministry has issued a tender to HAL with a three-month response time, making this the largest indigenous military hardware order by the Indian government.

This program aims to phase out obsolete aircraft like the MiG-21, MiG-23, and MiG-27, and significantly boost indigenization in India's defense sector. The Prime Minister's focus on reviving HAL, which now undertakes the production of a range of indigenous aircraft and helicopters, underscores this ambition.

In a historic move, Prime Minister Modi recently embarked on a sortie in the trainer variant of the indigenous fighter jet, marking a first for any Indian Prime Minister in a combat aircraft.
