Two young siblings died after allegedly falling into a rainwater-filled pit at a cemetery in Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior district, a police official revealed on Thursday. The tragic incident occurred in the Mohana locality late Wednesday evening, according to Niranjan Sharma, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP).

'An unfortunate incident has happened under the Mohana police station area in the district. Two siblings, a brother aged five and his younger sister aged three, went out to play on Wednesday evening. When they did not return by 8-8:30 pm, family members searched nearby areas and discovered them in the cemetery's pit, which was overfilled due to rain. Both children were found drowning,' ASP Niranjan Sharma told ANI. The police were alerted by the family, retrieved the children from the pit, and rushed them to the hospital, where they were declared dead. A case has been registered following a family complaint, and an investigation is underway, Sharma added.

Further action will be taken based on the investigation report, he emphasized. When asked about the pit, ASP Sharma explained that it was dug for visitors who wash their hands and feet, requiring a water source.

Local reports identified the children as the son and daughter of Sonu Khan from Danda Colony under the Mohana police station area, located 70 km from the district headquarters. The children went to play in the nearby cemetery, but when they did not return, the family began searching. Upon spotting their slippers near the pit, they looked into it and found the children. Police were immediately informed of the heart-wrenching discovery. (ANI)
