NHAI Implements Comprehensive Flood Preparedness Measures for Monsoon Season

To prevent water logging or flood conditions on National Highways, NHAI, in collaboration with state irrigation departments, is conducting joint inspections.

In response to the recurring issue of water logging on National Highways during the monsoon season, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has implemented a series of measures to enhance flood preparedness and ensure emergency response across the country's highways.

Multi-Pronged Approach for Effective Solutions

NHAI is adopting a multi-faceted strategy to address flood-related challenges in both hilly and plain regions. By collaborating closely with other executing agencies, local authorities, and administrative bodies, NHAI is ensuring rapid mobilization of machinery and manpower to flood or landslide-affected areas. This coordination also involves mapping the availability of essential machinery for timely deployment to enhance disaster preparedness.

Joint Inspections and Infrastructure Improvements

To prevent water logging or flood conditions on National Highways, NHAI, in collaboration with state irrigation departments, is conducting joint inspections. These inspections ensure that the flow of any running channels or streams is not obstructed by newly constructed highways. Special drives have been conducted, including on the Delhi-Karta Expressway, in consultation with irrigation departments.

In urban areas, NHAI is making adequate pumping arrangements in sections prone to water logging. Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) and the Rajmaargyatra app will be utilized to inform highway users about any disruptions.

Emergency Response in Hilly Regions

Dedicated Emergency Response Teams, equipped with sufficient manpower and machinery, have been deployed at landslide-prone sites in hilly regions in coordination with district administrations. These teams will quickly clear debris from highways to ensure 24/7 connectivity and safe traffic flow. Temporary barriers and warning signs have been installed at these sites to facilitate safe movement.

Preventive Measures and Real-Time Monitoring

NHAI has identified vulnerable locations prone to flooding, landslides, rock falls, and sinking zones. Officials are inspecting structures with a history of flooding to identify and address any damage. Warning signs will be installed at these vulnerable locations to caution road users.

In cases where highways may be blocked due to large landslides, alternative diversion plans have been developed with district administrations. Additionally, geotechnical instrumentation, including real-time monitoring at some vulnerable slopes and tunnels, is being implemented as a pilot project.

With the monsoon season advancing across India, NHAI has initiated multiple proactive measures to ensure flood preparedness and effective emergency response. These efforts are aimed at providing a seamless travel experience for National Highway users during the monsoon season.
