State-owned Coal India Limited (CIL) has announced a remarkable 8% increase in coal production, achieving 189.3 million tonnes in the first quarter of this financial year.

This notable rise comes in comparison to the 175.5 million tonnes produced during the same period last year. Exceeding its target of 189.2 million tonnes, CIL's performance marks a 100% target satisfaction for Q1 of the current fiscal year, according to a company statement issued recently.

All seven of CIL's producing subsidiaries reported positive growth, with five surpassing their individual targets. June's production alone saw a 9% increase, reaching 63 million tonnes compared to 58 million tonnes in June FY24. The company also saw a 4% increase in coal supply to coal-fired power plants, totaling 160 million tonnes in Q1 FY25 from 154 million tonnes in the same period last year.

Impressively, CIL reported an average daily loading of 325.7 rakes for the power sector, up by 19 rakes compared to the previous year's figures. This healthy growth extends to CIL's total average coal loading, which rose by 10.3% year-on-year to 367.2 rakes per day, signaling robust supply capabilities. With a 40% higher coal inventory at pitheads compared to last year, standing at 81.5 million tonnes, CIL is well-prepared to meet any sudden spike in demand. As the company accounts for over 80% of the domestic coal output, these developments are crucial for sustaining the nation's power supply amidst increasing demand.
