To provide a seamless and barrier-free tolling experience for National Highway users and enhance the efficiency and transparency of toll operations, the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), promoted by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), has invited Global Expressions of Interest (EOI) from innovative and qualified companies. The goal is to develop and implement a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system in India.
NHAI plans to integrate the GNSS-based ETC system within the existing FASTag ecosystem. Initially, a hybrid model will be used, where both RFID-based and GNSS-based ETC systems will operate simultaneously. Dedicated GNSS lanes will be available at toll plazas, allowing vehicles equipped with GNSS-based ETC to pass through freely. As the GNSS-based ETC becomes more widespread, all lanes will eventually be converted to GNSS lanes.
The EOI aims to identify experienced and capable companies that can deliver a robust, scalable, and efficient Toll Charger Software, which will serve as the backbone for the implementation of the GNSS-based ETC in India. The EOI also includes a complete implementation plan and invites suggestions on the same. Interested companies can email their interest to tenders@ihmcl.com by 1500 hrs (IST) on 22nd July 2024.
The implementation of GNSS-based ETC in India is expected to facilitate the smooth movement of vehicles along the National Highways. It offers several benefits to highway users, including barrier-free, free-flow tolling, and distance-based tolling where users will pay only for the stretch they have traveled on a National Highway. The GNSS-based ETC will also enhance toll collection efficiency by reducing leakages and preventing toll evasion.
This advanced toll collection system will contribute to providing a smoother and more seamless journey for commuters on National Highways, marking a significant step forward in the modernization of India's tolling infrastructure.
