A recreational submarine sank off the coast of Hurghada, Egypt, claiming the lives of six Russian tourists, including at least two children, according to the Red Sea governor. The ill-fated voyage was carrying 45 tourists and five Egyptian crew members when it succumbed to the sea.
Rescue operations were swift, resulting in the recovery of all tourists and crew, though 29 of the survivors sustained injuries. Among the passengers were tourists from India, Norway, and Sweden, contradicting initial reports from the Russian consulate stating all onboard were Russian nationals.
The tragic event, involving the submarine named 'Sindbad,' which typically offers underwater tours of up to three hours along the scenic coral reefs, underscores ongoing safety concerns in the Red Sea region. The incident follows a November yacht sinking that resulted in casualties amid rough weather warnings.
