Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has reiterated that the Third Battle of Panipat serves as an emblem of Maratha bravery, rather than defeat. Addressing the state assembly, Fadnavis announced the construction of memorials in Agra and Panipat to honor this historic struggle.
The assembly debate, initiated by the opposition, highlighted contrasting views on Panipat's symbolism. NCP MLA Jitendra Awhad questioned memorials in Panipat, considering it a site of Maratha defeat. He argued it is not usual to memorialize defeats.
Fadnavis countered by citing the Marathas' valiant actions, stating that their effort during the 1761 battle demonstrated their heroism. He explained how the Marathas opposed Afghan ruler Ahmad Shah Abdali, maintaining a stance against ceding territory and ensuring much of India remained free from foreign control.
